I was born in South Africa and have been living in Australia since 1993.
Sewing and craft have always filled my life. I take every opportunity I can to learn any new techniques and teach myself a lot through books and experimenting. I gained most of my knowledge and experience through the ‘University of Disaster’. I recon that I have made all the mistakes and that is how I learned all the crafts.
I taught sewing and patternmaking in a studio above my house for nearly 20 years and ended up writing five sewing related book between 1985 and 1993. My passion and focus has always been textiles
Knitting has always been my form of relaxation. I love wool because of all the colours. When I was a child a wool shop was like a sweet shop…… I just loved all the colours and textures. So, it is no surprise that when I stumbled on Felting I took to it with great passion. It is wonderful after all these years of sewing and craft to feel such passion for a technique that pulls together all my other interests. Felted clothes are wonderful, light, warm and durable. Felt is terrific to stitch and embroider and it makes great wall hangings, cushions etc. The list of things you can make is endless.
Now I suppose I am what could be described as a "mixed media/Textile artist." What's that? Well, I think it's a person who keeps a wide variety of "materials and bits and pieces”, takes great pleasure in using them and dabbles in anything to do with textiles.
After eight years of working in an office I decided to return to my first love, teaching. Now I teach sewing, knitting, Overlocking and Felting at various Community and Adult Education Centres near the area where I live. I look forward with great excitement to the next 25 years. My aim is to live long enough to use up all the bits and pieces of fabric, thread, wool, roving, lace, paper, paint, stamps etc before I die.
